First introduced in 1979, the reference 16800 replaced the reference 1680 and ushered in a new generation of Submariner dive watches. The reference 1680 was the first Rolex Submariner to ever feature a date complication; however it was still a decidedly vintage timepiece. The reference 16800 took the general date-displaying design of the reference 1680, and paired it with a new movement and a re-designed case and bezel to create a modern and technically advanced dive watch that still shared a familiar design language with its already well-established predecessors.
The reference 16800 marks the introduction of sapphire crystals and unidirectional, ratcheting bezels to the Submariner line.
